Central Otago
Central Otago is famed for producing outstanding Pinot Noir. The first plantings in 1864 were made by Frenchman Jean Desire Feraud, who recognized the regions potential for winegrowing. The dramatic mountainous landscape contrasted by pristine blue lakes and rivers to offer one of the finest and most beautiful areas to make wine in the world. The warm summer days and cool nights capture the complexity, fruit purity and bright acidity in the wines. Pinot Noir dominates the regions plantings and is the most celebrated grape of the region. Aromatic whites and Methode Traditionnelle sparkling wines also have potential to be outstanding with a variety of styles produced from textural fruit driven Pinot Gris to racy mineral Rieslings and detailed Chardonnays.
